The story of the expressive languages of the new ALPI 2017 wood collections, presented at FuoriSalone in Milano the past April, continues at Sicam defining an unique and original concept in which different atmospheres can coexist: evocative, warm and tactile in the reproductions of wood, innovative, visual and dynamic in the graphic designs.

Result of the expertise and a passion for aesthetic research on wooden materials, the new collection designed by Kengo Kuma, Fratelli Campana and Piero Lissoni, redefine the intrinsic characteristics and offer various new materic effects inspired both by the world of nature, with its absolutely evocative forms and colors, and by the world of design par excellence, embodied by graphic solutions of great originality and visual impact.

Alongside with the latest novelties, ALPI will show also the new ALPI Sottsass collection: re-edition of an original pattern realized by Ettore Sottsass in the 80’ and now proposed in the ALPI catalogue in the four colors chosen by himself: red, orange, brown and grey.

ALPI continues its tradition in the creation of exclusive wood patternsthrough a fascinating and advanced production process, where pure innovation blends with meticulous tailor-made craftsmanship, enhancing the design freedom and aesthetic impact of a living material like wood.

Uniqueness and personality define in fact the Alpi wood, allowing to choose among a versatile and wide range of veneers that perfectly reproduce colors and veins of the natural woods or patterns that cannot be found in nature, becoming witnesses of the deep project and industrial culture of the company.
Able to interpret and to read heterogeneous languages, ALPI offers custom woods at the service of the project world, besides the wide catalogue in continuous development, through a large range of essences, textures and tones in order to answer to every creative demand of architects and designers.

The natural impressions and graphic patterns of the last collections by Piero Lissoni, Fratelli Campana and Kengo Kuma are the protagonist of a sophisticated set-up designed by Studio Lissoni, which brings out the appeal of the ALPI woods through a series of panels clad with a mixture of different finishes in a visual itinerary of great expressive impact.

An elegant frame on the wall contains instead the wide range of essences, textures and chromatic variants of the collections, highlighting the detailed project research in the transformation of the nature of the material beyond the parameters of conventional development, becoming Wood by Design.

2017 NEW DESIGNER COLLECTIONS

Designer Collection by Piero Lissoni

The elegant aesthetic of Piero Lissoni generates new, exclusive wood patterns: Ikat reproduces an original graphic image, while Thermo and Blush Cherry bring out the natural characteristics of the wood. The Xilo 2.0 collection has been expanded with four new versions: Xilo 2.0 1-Flamed, Xilo 2.0 2-Flamed, Xilo 2.0 Planked-Flamed and Xilo 2.0 Striped XL.

The new Ikat veneers are based on the world of oriental textiles. "Ikat" comes from the Malay word “mengikat,” meaning "to tie," i.e. the traditional dyeing technique where parts of the yarn are protected by tight bindings to keep the dyes from reaching them, while the other parts absorb the color. The weaving of the yarns thus treated creates a particular design known as “ikat,” generated by the intersection of warp and weft, which becomes the creative impulse behind this new ALPI collection that features simple and slightly blurred geometric motifs, combining subtly similar or delicately contrasting hues. A transfer of textile art onto wood that stimulates new aesthetic and perceptive sensations, translated as facings in the domestic context.

Piero Lissoni also explores the beauty of natural woods through the new creations Thermo and Blush Cherry, playing with different chromatic or structural variations of the material, bringing out intrinsic properties. Thermo, a wood with dark tones like those of roasted coffee, gets its inspiration from thermo-treatment processes that accentuate the grain of natural wood, while Blush Cherry echoes the typical tone of natural cherry, attenuated by a blanching technique that gives it a rosy, feminine image. A white cherry with sophisticated, vigorous notes that creates sensations of warmth and welcome.

Legacy Collection

In the new Legacy collection coordinated by Piero Lissoni ALPI focuses the identity of the material at the center of its research, by means of a fascinating production procedure, achieving the objective of reproducing the materic essence of wood, underlining its intrinsic features.

This new collection contains lost woods like ebony, teak, wengé, rosewood and zebrawood, species that are threatened with extinction, whose use is therefore practically banned.

Strong aesthetic impact, natural durability and excellent levels of strength have increased the demand for these woods over the years, causing serious problems of deforestation and illegal harvesting: ALPI wants to preserve the beauty of the material, reproducing these woods, thanks to the application of the company’s innovative technologies in the world of production of wood-based materials.

Designer Collection by Kengo Kuma

The creations of Kengo Kuma, Maritime Pine and Japanese Cedar, narrate the expressive identity of the material in its primordial state, through exploration of the force and ruggedness of nature: therefore bark is utilized as a communicative sign that embodies the essence of the material, becoming its most outstanding characteristic.

Maritime Pine reproduces the bark of this species, a thick substance split by deep cracks, with segments of irregular form, varying from warm reddish tones to cold shades of light grey.

The cedar tree, always a symbol of longevity and majesty, on the other hand, has bark that varies from red to brown, skillfully reproduced in Japanese Cedar, also in terms of the alterations that happen as the tree grows: in the section closer to the roots the bark appears smooth, becoming more furrowed and vertically split towards the top of the tree.

The two creations express their identity through textures connected with the discovery and use of elements from nature in architecture and design, becoming perfect expressions of the infinite design potential of the ALPI product range.

Designer Collection by the Campana Brothers

The lines of graphic design defining the innovative and original creation Sushi by the Campana Brothers, who defy nature to generate a dynamic, dreamy pattern.

The Sushi collection gets its inspiration from the design of the collection of the same name created in 2002 by the Campana Brothers. This innovative covering technique calls for different types of fabrics, rugs, felt and rubber to be rolled together to create spirals that clad the products, generating an unconventional and very particular effect.

The graphic decoration of these swirls is reproduced on ALPI wood thanks to the company’s expertise and sartorial skill, which make it possible to recreate this pattern, conserving its geometric and dreamy harmony. A wood that becomes an oneiric interpretation of the immense creativity of the Brazilian duo, charged with thoughts, poetry, energy and color which ALPI offers in two chromatic versions, in brown and slate grey, with contrasting details in gold for the former, and silver for the latter.

ALPI Sottsass Collection

The ALPI Sottsass wood are characterized by the accentuation of veining design which enhance the bright colours of the veneers, evoking the unusual combinations of the language of the architect.

Volume, surface and color come together in the design and thinking of Ettore Sottsass to create dynamic connections between visual art and design, introducing a potentially infinite range of possibilities and a design style that perfectly distinguishes this collection realized for ALPI.
